👋 Hello everyone,
Bryant H. McGill said, "One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say."
Here are a few resources you might have missed:
📚 Book Summary:
This week's book is "Just Listen" by Mark Goulston.
No leader can go wrong by reading this book. Many are looking for an exercise program for their listening muscles, and this book provides great insights and techniques for transforming your communication skills.
One of my favorite takeaways from the book is this:
"Inside every person—no matter how important or famous—is a real person who needs to 'feel felt.' Satisfy that need, and you’ll transform yourself from a face in the crowd to a friend or an ally. Think of someone you’re trying to reach who either makes excuses or pushes back in some manner. Put yourself in the person’s shoes and ask yourself, 'What would I feel in this person’s position?'"
✅ Actionable advice:
To reach another person, you have to be willing to give up your agenda and your own desire to be interesting and instead be interested. The first key is to stop thinking of conversation as a tennis match. Instead, think of it as a detective game where you aim to learn as much about the other person as possible. Enter the conversation hungry to learn something interesting about the person and be determined to discover it. This will lead you to instinctively ask questions that let the other person fully develop an interesting story rather than trying to trump that story. You'll listen to what the person is saying rather than thinking solely about what you will say next. This is how you make others "feel felt" and foster deeper connections and understanding. I challenge you to do this in your next conversation.
